Judi's Kit Quilt Collection

1. Red Wagon with Boy/Girl/Dog Crib Coverlet 
   and Pillow Cover – 1931 - 34” x 45” and 12” x 16”

This is a Vogart design marketed by the J.B.K. Co. as F-31 for the crib cover and F-32 for the pillow cover.  J.B.K. Co sold thru S.S. Kresge’s catalogs and stores. Kresge’s became K-mart in 1977.  Floss did not come with the items and had to be supplied by the maker. 

2. Rabbits In The Garden Crib Coverlet with
    Pillow Cover - 1920s - 34" x 45" and 12" x 16"  

These are Vogart designs #281 for the coverlet and #280 for the pillow cover that were marketed by J.B.K. Co. and sold thru S. S. Kresge's stores in the 1920 and 30s. Indicative of the J.B.K. Co.’s designs are the unusual aqua blue and yellow gold colors which were not used in other Vogart items. Embroidery is beautifully done and both in excellent condition.   

3. Baby Crib Coverlet with Pillow Cover - 1927 - 
   36" x 60" & 12" x 18"

This crib coverlet pattern #518 and pillow cover pattern #519 was manufactured by the Royal Society Co. of New York in 1927 in a kit form and sold by F.A. Herrschners catalogs.  Everything in the kit was included: i.e. pink lawn fabric, floss, netting, and even a needle. It has a lawn background with embroidery and an overlay of pink netting fabric.  Exquisitely done; maker unknown.

4. Pajama Boy and Puppy - 1928 - 32" x 47"

This is a Royal Society crib top - pattern #555 sold thru the Royal Society catalog in 1928.  Beautifully embroidered with floss over lightly faded tinted areas and edged with a purchased lace trim.  Catalog is included with the picture in the kit quilt album.

5. The Woman In The Shoe - Crib Cover - 1929
    40” x 60”

This is a very rare Royal Society crib cover No. 6420 that was hand tinted, prestamped for embroidery and excellently embroidered. The top and bottom edges were turned under and sewn down.

5.1 Alice in Wonderland - Crib Cover - 1929
      42" x 64"

This crib cover by Royal Society is No. 6729 that was hand tinted and prestamped for embroidery. It has Alice and all the characters from the story - Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Red Queen, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, etc. It has never been finished nor used and is in pristine condition as the day it was made.  It still has it's original J.J.Robinson department store tag in Los Angeles.  Back then it only cost $1 to buy it.

 

6. Dogs in Balloon Crib Cover – 1930s – 34” x 44”

This Vogart design was marketed by J.B.K. Co. and sold thru S.S. Kresge’s stores in the 1930s. Indicative of the J.B.K. Co.’s designs are the unusual lime green, red and yellow colors which were not used in other Vogart items. Embroidery is beautifully done and top in excellent condition.

 

7. Bunny and Kitty Crib Cover – 1930s – 31” x 44”

Here is another charming Vogart coverlet with tinted figures showing a bunny pushing a kitty in a swing.  Tint is slightly faded, embroidered beautifully and bound with a narrow blue bias binding.  Excellent condition.

8. Bear Coverlet and Pillow – 1930s
   11”x 16” & 29” x 38” 

This is Vogart design No 2075 Crib Cover Vogart Form 505. A matching pillow has no visible pattern number.  Both were made in the 1930s. Exquisitely embroidered and tinted with no fading. The pillow has a surrounding eyelet trim. 

9. Victorian Couple W/Birds -1920s - 50" x 66"

This is Bucilla's pattern #8642 marked as at Child's Quilt and Made in the U.S.A.  The edges of the figures were not turned under for applique but the surrounding raw edges in black floss were expertly button hole stitched. The rest of the embroidery was done in yellow and black floss.  Hand quilting was done 8 stitches per inch. 


10. Doll/Bear/Balloon Crib Quilt - 1930s
        44" x 53"


This is thought to be a Bucilla kit from the 1930's when they put out kits with tinted motifs and designs to be embroidered. Found in a junk store in New Orleans years ago with the blue checkered and hot pink fabric from the 1930s. It is hand quilted in 10 spi in blue thread. 

11. "Kiddie Kar" Crib Quilt - 1930 - 40" x 60"

This Homeneedlecraft Creation pattern # 7274 is of a little boy sitting on toy car in the center of the quilt and in each corner are separate motifs of a giraffe, 2 clowns and a rabbit. All superbly hand appliqued, hand embroidered and then hand quilted. Maker unknown. 

12. Three Little Pigs Crib & Pillow Coverlet -
      1930's - 36" x 45"& 12" x 18" 

This crib coverlet #533 and pillow #535 were made and hand tinted by Vogart designs.  They were then marketed by J.C. Penny under its label of "PENNYMAID "and sold as a set for 49 cents. All the lines surrounding the figures, etc were to be embroidered in floss in outline, daisy and French knot stitches. The unbleached muslin coverlet was never intended to be quilted and only used as a summer spread on the crib for neatness and decoration.  Judi Fibush did the embroidery and added a 1/2" red binding. 

13. Musical Clowns Crib Coverlet - 1930’s
      44” x 64”

Cover made by Bucilla pattern #2886 – prestamped muslin for embroidery. Here are the clowns at 15” tall. One clown plays a banjo, one has a horn and the other is juggling.

14. Cats On A Swing Crib Coverlet and Pillow
      1930's - 34" x 49" and 11' x 15"

Another Vogart crib coverlet and pillow set that was hand tinted, prestamped for embroidery, exquisitely finished and beautifully completed with a thin blue binding.

15. See Saw Crib Coverlet - 1930’s - 30” x 44”

Another Vogart crib coverlet #288 that was hand tinted and prestamped for embroidery.

16. Dutch Children Crib Coverlet & Pillow - 1930’s
      32” x 50” and 12” x 17”

This is a charming crib coverlet and pillow set probably made in the 1930’s by Bucilla which made most of the applique and embroidery items of the time.  The figures on both pieces are finely appliqued and then button hole stitched around the clothes.  A windmill, flowers, facial and body features are expertly embroidered. The binding on the coverlet is blanket stitched in pink yarn.

17. Teddy Bear and Bluebird Crib Coverlet -
       1930’s - 34” x 44”
 

This is a Vogart design for a crib coverlet that was hand tinted and prestamped for embroidery.  No markings are apparent to give the design number nor the date year.  A 3” wide pink cotton border finished it off quite nicely.

18. Music Box Children and Lambs Crib Cover
      1930s – 31” x 41”

This is probably a Vogart crib cover but no markings are visible.  It shows a boy and girl attached to music box platforms with attending lambs. The little girl is probably Bo Peep.  The tinted areas of blue, green and yellow are gently faded and the embroidery is excellently done. Gently used but still enchanting.

19. Drum Major/Drummer Teddy Bear Crib  
      Coverlet - 1930's - 32' x 42"

This is a Bucilla design from the 1930's although not documented. It was hand tinted in tan for the bear's face, arms, and legs and a bright red for the coat, hat and drum and beautifully embroidered in black, blue, gold around the coat and pale green. Fading of both colors is seen especially in the tan areas. The bear is 24" tall which makes this an unusually large motif.  A small hole was excellently patched near the base of the drum on the right lower side and a very few tiny blue embroidery stitches are missing but still a delightful and adorable coverlet for a crib. 

20. Sold Good Night Moon Crib Cover - 1930s
      31" x 45"

This is a Vogart crib cover No. 2023 with lightly faded tinted figures that have been embroidered beautifully. The edges have various colored fabrics from the 1930s machine stitched to make a colorful border. Nicely made and although used, kept very well.

21. Tug of War Crib Quilt - 1930's -  35” by 42”

This is a Progress crib quilt kit made in the 1930s - pattern number unknown. It shows a boy and his dog and a girl and her cat playing tug of war.  The applique and embroidery and quilting are excellently done. Three small holes were darned on the front . The back is blue flannel and bound with a red binding. There are no other holes, tears or marks and odor free.  Condition is excellent. 

22. Goldilocks and 3 Bears - 1930s - 33" x 42"

This crib top was made By Vogart, marketed by J.B.K. Co as pattern #350 and sold through S. S. Kresge's in the 1930s. There was also a pillow pattern #351. The lime green, red and mustard colors are indicative what Vogart did expressly for J.B.K. Co textiles. Nicely embroidered with a 3 tiny rust stains at the bottom which would not soak out.

23. Lambie Pie Crib Quilt - 1933 - 35" x 54"

This is a Home Needlecrafts Creations, Pattern #7267. It features 5 lambs in pink and one in gray in the center along with 4 blue colored bows. A white center panel with scalloped edges is to be appliqued to the blue colored border. The kit included white bleached sheeting background and all fabrics to be appliqued, embroidery threads and premarked places for applique pieces and quilting lines. Quilted at 8 spi in daisy flowers and straight lines. Back is white sheeting with no batting.

24. Girl and Dog in Car Crib Coverlet - 1932 -
      36” x 48”

This is thought to be a J.B.K. Co. crib cover and pillow set.  Tinted areas greatly faded with a yellow cotton 2” binding and still charming.

25. Teddy Bears Climbing Stairs Crib Cover -
       1934 - 30" X 44"

This is Vogart pattern 2063 made in Fall of 1934.  It was hand tinted and prestamped for embroidery which was excellently done.  A couple small holes have been neatly darned around the blue bear's right eye. A 2 inch wide cotton border binding was added.

26. Kitty Puppy Playing Crib Cover
      and Pillow cover- 1934 - 28" x 40"

This is Vogart number 2062 made in the Fall of 1934. It is tinted, the embroidery is perfect and the cover is in excellent condition. It shows a gray puppy in a pink basket watching a gray kitty playing with a pink ball of yarn. The Pillow cover number 2061 in the same coloring is also tinted and embroidered. Neither has ever been washed or used.

27. Teddy Bear with Bubbles Crib Quilts and
       Pillow Cover - 1935 - 15” x 16” and 27” x 39”

These two quilts and one pillow cover were made by Vogart. Crib quilts are # 2030 and pillow cover is #2029 and sold thru F.W. Woolworth catalogs in 1935.  It was in a Fall catalog marked F-35 with the label of N.R.A. 31-29 making it part of the National Recovery Act.  FDR established a minimum wage and a maximum work week to divide the benefit of increased productivity between capital and labor. That Act was declared unconstitutional in 1935 by the Supreme Court.  Pillow colors are good except for the faded red balloon.  Only the pillow was bound in red binding. Crib colors are mostly lightly faded. The quilt has a nicely added border of striped fabrics in red, green and blue that are cut into triangles.  The scalloped binding is red binding.

28. Bunnies and Blue Birds 1935 - 30" x 44"

This Crib Coverlet made by Vogart is No. 2184,
N.R.A  S35 No. 31 - 29. It was advertised in the F. W. Woolworth Summer 1935 catalog. Since the N.R.A. act was made in 1933, this coverlet was manufactured in 1935. That Act was declared unconstitutional in 1935. Beautifully embroidered by hand. The fabric is muslin and the hand tinted color is slightly faded but the overall top is in excellent condition.

29. Two Kitties Crib Coverlet - 1935 - 30" x 40"

This coverlet was made by Vogart # 2031 and was sold thru F.W. Woolworth catalogs in 1935.  It was in a Fall catalog marked F-35 with the label of N.R.A. 31-29 making it part of the National Recovery Act.  That Act was declared unconstitutional in 1935. Any item with a N.R.A. label is rare and finding one on a crib coverlet is highly unusual. It shows 2 kitties - boy and girl - holding hands and walking from the house on the hill.  Embroidery is well done and colors are vivid.

30. Nutcracker Suite Coverlet - 1933-1935 -
      33" x 45"

This is a Christmas themed Crib Coverlet made by Vogart No. 216-A - N.R.A No. 31 - 29. Since the N.R.A. act was made in 1933, this coverlet could have been manufactured during the time period from 1933-1935. That Act was declared unconstitutional in 1935. Beautifully embroidered by hand and the color is hand tinted on the cloth.  It is done on flour sack type fabric that is off white. The 1 - 3/4 inch wide blue binding is finished by machine.

31. Elephant and Dog Crib Coverlet
      1935 - 30" x 44"

This Elephant and Dog Crib Coverlet made by Vogart is No. 216-B - N.R.A No. 31 - 29. Since the N.R.A. act was made in 1933, this coverlet was manufactured in 1935. That Act was declared unconstitutional in 1935. Beautifully embroidered by hand in buttonhole stitches. The fabric is muslin and the hand tinted color is slightly faded but the overall top is in excellent condition. The 1/2 inch wide orange binding is finished by machine.

32. Dutch Boy & Girl & Rabbit Crib Coverlet -
      1936 - 32” x 44” and 12” x 18”

This is a Vogart design crib top # 242 and pillow #241 sold thru F. W. Woolworth catalogs - Spring 1936
(S-36).  Stamped for embroidery and hand tinted on muslin.

33. Soldier Dog and Dog Crib Cover - 1936
      38" x 53"

This is a Vogart design No. 243 manufactured in 1936. It was hand tinted and stamped for embroidery on muslin. The embroidery was exquisitely done around the figures and a 3 inch blue binding was added.  Never been used or washed.  Perfect condition.

34. Kitten/Puppy On Fence Crib Coverlet - 1936
      32” x 44”

This is Vogart design No. 288 manufactured in 1936. It was hand tinted and stamped for embroidery on muslin. The embroidery was exquisitely done around the figures and the flowers. A binding was never added.

35. Swing Time Crib Cover - 1938 - 36" x 45"

This sweet crib cover was made by the Fixler Bros, marketed by Wonder Art Needleworks and sold thru the S. S. Kresge catalogs - listed as pattern No. 955 in the catalog. This example is exceptional in the embroidery and applique work with a satin stitch around cover which is attached to a wool flannel back and then crocheted in pink joining it all together. Never been washed not used and is in pristine condition.

36. Mary and Her Little Lamb Crib Cover– 1939
      32" x 42”

This is a Vogart pattern number 441 tinted and embroidered showing Mary and her Lamb. Wording on the selvage says “No 441 Crib Cover made in USA by Vogart Wash tinted goods with warm water and white soap – don’t use wringer – don’t roll – when still wet hang on line – F39”. Beautifully embroidered and kept in excellent condition with some fading of the tint color.

37. Animal Crib Cover and Pillow - 1930s-1940s
      44" x 56" and 12" x 16"

This charming embroidered crib cover and pillow is tinted and embroidered showing a bear, elephant, duck pull toy, rooster, dog, chicken and tree with flowers.  There is button hole stitching around the inside borders on both the pillow and crib cover. The crib cover also has a 4 inch pale yellow outside border.  Lightly faded and used but in excellent condition.

38. Snow White and Dwarfs Crib Cover and
      Pillow Cover - 1949 - 29' x 40" and 12" x 16"

This little coverlet is most probably a Vogart design from the 1940's but it is not marked. Only 4 of the dwarfs are pictured not the original 7. It has exquisite embroidery and well kept with a narrow scalloped pink binding. The pillow is more faded but marked Vogart and in good condition.

39. Baby Elephant Crib Cover – 1943 – 32” x 42”

This crib cover was made by Fixler Bros. and sold by Wonder Art thru J.J. Newbury catalogs.  The elephant is appliqued in blue patches but also came in pink.  Excellent embroidery is completed with  perle cotton and has been kept in excellent condition.

40. Flowered Quilt Blocks - 1946 - 11" square

These are 14 Vogart 11" squares with 7 different designs.  They are hand tinted and are to be embroidered and then joined with the solid color fabrics shown to make a large quilt top which will be quilted.  The markings on the squares are:  No 106, 107, 108,109, 110, 111, 584 and 596 -  Quilt Block 
F-46  Ask for " and other Vogart" Original. They were sold thru  1946 S. S. Kresge and 1947 F.W. Woolworth catalogs.

41. Clowns Crib Quilt - 1950’s – 40” x 58”

This is Progress crib quilt kit #1528. It was prestamped with lines to place 5 clowns on a white background with all quilting lines prestamped. The clowns came on solid and gingham prestamped fabrics to be appliqued on the background.

42. Two Sisters Crib Quilt - 1951 - 30"x 46"

This is Jack Dempsey (JayDee) pattern #4060-9. It was originally sized at 40" x 60" and was prestamped on the white bleached sheeting background to be embroidered. No markings for quilting lines were included. Cost of this kit was $3.79. Judi Fibush hand quilted it at 8 spi around all figures and all lines. The batting is a light wool flannel and the back and binding are a 1940's light green flannel.

43. "The Daffodil" Quilt - 1958 - 77" x 91"

The Daffodil quilt is Progress kit # 1437 and was manufactured in the late 1930’s and sold thru Lee Wards and other catalogs.  The appliqué of white swag and all leaves were done by the unknown original owner. The appliqués of flowers, embroidery and 9 spi hand quilting lines were done by Judi Fibush from Rocklin, CA in 2010 with the original  1 1/2" to 2" preprinted quilting lines narrowed to 1/4"  to 1/2".

44. Tree of Life Quilt – 1958 – 79’ x 97”

This is Progress kit # 1492 and was manufactured in the 1950 and sold thru Lee Wards and other companies catalogs. This kit was manufactured with the large center flower in pink in 1930, blue in 1950 and purple in 1970.  Progress was bought by Tobin, Sporn & Glaser, Inc. in 1944 and this particular kit was manufactured by T.S.&G. The appliqué and embroidery work was done by Nancy Carr of Liverpool, NY. The original preprinted blue dot  quilting lines were 1 1/2"to 2" apart.  Judi Fibush of Rocklin, CA did the hand quilting lines narrowed  down to 1/4" to 1/2" wide. This quilt was featured in the 2017 "Gilding The Lilly's" show at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts. 

45. Bambi Crib Quilt - 1950's - 40” x 58”

This is a Paragon/Needlecraft Creations crib quilt #0522 with Bambi in the center and Flower, Thumper, a bird and an owl in the corners.  It was sold in later years thru Lee Wards, the Stitchery, McCall’s, Family Circle and Herrschners catalogs and ads. . It has prestamped lines for cross stitch embroidery put on a cotton pre-quilted fabric. Because the fabric was pre-quilted, this is a summer type cover and not warm like a regular quilt. The embroidery and binding were done by an unknown previous owner. 

46. Fairyland Crib Quilt - 1940s - 44" x 64"

This is an outstanding crib quilt from Paragon
# 010686 this is magnificently done. The appliqued figures of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel plus the Princes and Horses are invisibly attached.  The embroidery is so detailed that the Wicked Witch even has long red fingernails. A master needlework woman did this to perfection. This quilt was featured in the 2017 "Gilding The Lilly's" show at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts.

47. Humpty Dumpty Crib Quilt – 1962 -37” x 50”

Bucilla made and sold this crib quilt thru the Fall-Winter 1962 McCall’s Needlework & Crafts magazine.  It is pattern #8816 and features Humpty falling off the wall toward 2 soldiers cleaning up the mess once he hits the ground.  2 other soldiers are on top with one on a horse.  Applique and embroidery are excellent with no damage or stains and machine quilted in a cross hatch pattern.  The original kit did include a Humpty pajama bag.  

48. Children Under A Tree With Animals - 1970's
      38" x 59"

This is a Progress crib top from the late 1970's. Pattern number would be 14xx in that area.  Beautifully embroidered in mostly cross stitch and in excellent condition.

49. Animal Kingdom Crib Quilt - 1950s - 40” x 60”

This is Progress crib quilt kit #1541.  It is a prestamped top with six prestamped gingham animal patches to be appliqued and a narrow yellow border around each animal block.  Prestamped quilting lines are also shown.  It was sold by Herrschners and Lee Wards. Applique and embroidery beautifully done with a red checked backing and binding.

50. Clown and Circus Animals Crib Cover –
       1970s? – 39” x 55”

No markings indicate the maker of this crib cover but the style and applique seem to put in the Progress company’s style.  It is beautifully done with applique in the clown’s clothes, the zebra, the two monkeys, the elephant and the kangaroos.  The embroidery is excellently done also. This size would have covered a 6 year crib well.

51. Our Gang Crib Quilt - 1977 - 40” x 60”

This cover is Paragon crib cover.  It was sold thru Herrschners catalogs. Bambi and Pluto are in front of Pluto’s doghouse with other Disney characters around them. It has prestamped lines for cross stitch embroidery put on a cotton pre-quilted fabric. Because the fabric was pre-quilted, this is a summer type cover and not warm like a regular quilt. It sold for $11.98.

52. Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Crib Quilt
      1982 - 36" x50"

This completed crib top has been embroidered and hand quilted. It is a Nojae of Fairway pattern 926-21. It features the first line of the children's night time prayer with little teddy bears and chains of daisies jointing them. The Fairway company is still making embroidered items and selling them thru craft stores:
e.g. Jo-Ann, Michaels, etc.

53. Bear Family Walking Crib Cover 36" x 45"- 1938

In the late 1930s, Bucilla used applique fabrics and cross stitch embroidery on their items The instructions said to use buttonhole stitches to sew the fabric to the background. This is beautifully appliqued and embroidered on a course muslin fabric. This is clean with no markings or tears.

54. Pussy Willow Crib Quilt - 1930s - 36" x 55"

This HomeNeedleCraft sweet crib (in excellent condition) quilt has a center panel with gray pussy willows and willow catkins.  The two side panels as well as the whole quilt is heavily hand quilted at 10 stitches per inch.  The kit was made by HomeNeedleCraft in the 1930s but also sold in Herrschner's and Lee Ward's catalogs in the 1940s and 1950s.  Besides this color combination, it also came in pink, green and maize with gray accents. 

55. "The Buggy Ride" Crib Top - 1930s - 32" x 56"

This Royal Society crib top is pattern number 6388 showing a donkey pulling a cart with a puppy looking on.  The fabrics for the blue cart and calico puppy are appliqued to the top and the rest is done in embroidery floss.  A red floss stitch surrounds the edge.  It had extensive staining from age related issues.  Most were eliminated but a slight yellowing overall is still visible. A very rare and large crib top that is hard to find.

56. Dog/Cat/Cart Top - 1930s - 31" x 43.5"

This is a Vogart summer spread not a plain top nor quilt.  It is backed with a sweet fabric print with various birds in white, red and yellow on a blue background.  The little Scottie (referring to FDR's Scottie Fala at the time) is pulling a cart with a kitty in it.

 Pillow Covers

1. Bunny Crib Pillow – 1930s - 10” x 15”

This little pillow cover was sold thru the American Thread Co as pattern # 124A and said to use Star Brands floss. It was made and also sold by Vogart as pattern #39.  It is tinted and embroidered.  Tinting was discontinued in the 1940s.

3. Couple Pillow - 1940 - 15" Square  

A very charming Vogart pillow #116 with a boy courting a girl. Sold in the Spring 1940 Wonder Art Needlework catalog from S.S. Kresge's. The embroidery is exquisite in French knots, lazy daisy and outline stitching. No damage and in excellent condition.

4. Cat Couple Applique Crib Pillow Cover – 1938
    13 ½” x 14 ½” 
 

This Vogart crib pillow cover No 573A was sold thru F. W. Woolworth Co.- Spring and Summer 1938 Catalog.  In the late 1930s, Vogart used applique fabrics on their items instead the traditional colored tinting. The instructions said to use buttonhole stitches to sew the fabric to the background.  This is beautifully embroidered on a course muslin fabric. Never used and Vogart markings in the selvage.

5. Toy Soldier, Trees and Puppy Pillow - 1930s
    11" square

Possibly a Vogart printed pillow or quilt square but nicely embroidered and made into a pillow.

6. Pioneer/Homesteader" Pillow - 1937 - 16" x 20

This pillow cover is made from beige burlap-like linen depicting a couple traveling by covered wagon with their oxen to move West.  The figures and background are tinted in color and appropriate outline embroidery stitching is beautifully done.  Manufactured and sold by J.B.K. Co. as item number 182 in the Fall of 1937.  No title for the pillow remained so the "name" is just an idea of what it might be.  No stains nor damage and in excellent condition.

7. Two Dogs Painting - 1938 - 14" x 18"

This pillow cover is Vogart #25 showing a dog being an artist painting his dog friend. It has some minor color distortion in the red cap and two very faint age spots under the easel.  Embroidery is excellently done and it is clean without tears or holes.
